“That Is Why I Have Come”

Jesus knew what he had come to earth to do. And so, when the time was
right, he came forward from the crowds and was baptized. John had
prepared the way so that at least some were ready to believe that Jesus was
the Christ, the Son of the living God. With this small band of followers
Jesus began his public ministry of teaching and healing.

In his account Mark emphasizes the actions of Jesus more than his teachings. Many have concluded
that his gospel was an effort to bring Romans to faith in Jesus, and that is why he focused on his
character and his power more than his words. Whatever his purpose, what we have in this gospel
account is a narrative that moves very quickly from one scene to the next. While short in duration,
every scene is filled with meaning, deepening our understanding of the man and his message.

In this first chapter I can’t help but be impressed by Jesus’ compassion demonstrated in his
willingness to serve all kinds of people till all hours of the night. He sacrificed his own comfort and
convenience for the sake of those who were hurting and outcast. He knew why he had come and he
focused his efforts on fulfilling his mission.

• Questions to Consider: Which one of the vignettes in chapter one stands out to you the
most? What is it that impresses you about Jesus in this situation? How can you strive to imitate
that quality in your life today?
