“And Why Do You Worry?”
Someone once said that you can tell a lot about a person by knowing what they worry about the
most. Maybe I said that, because in my sinful nature I am a worrier. And when I worry, I am playing
the “what if” scenarios over and over again in my mind. I have no problem seeing the problems even
when they haven’t even happened, yet. I can imagine what the problems will be.
However, in all honesty, most of my worry is not about what I’ll eat, drink or wear. Perhaps I should
be more concerned than I am about these things, in the right way. I do believe that God will take
care of me and therefore, what I have right now is what I need right now. But there are still times in
my life when I realize my treasure is wrapped up somewhere here on earth, because not only do I
begin to “worry” about material things, but I begin to “run after all these things”. My thoughts, and
time and energy become consumed with the material issues of my life with the result that I have very
little, if any thought, time or energy for seeking the kingdom of God. When I am not seeking first
the kingdom of God in terms of my thought, time, energy and even physical resources, I know that I
am all wrapped up in the things of this world.
• Questions to Consider: What are you worried about right now? Are the main issues in your
mind and life having to do with the kingdom of God and his righteousness or with “all these
things” of the world? Are you seeking first the kingdom of God right now?
