We are a congregation of people who believe that God exists and that he is the creator of all that is. We also believe that out of his great love for us, he gave us his Word (the Bible) to make himself known to us and that he gave his Son (Jesus) to be an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
From the Bible we understand that when a person hears the gospel and responds to it with a true faith that results in repentance (a turning away from sin), and baptism (immersion in water in Jesus’ name), he has made a decision to follow Jesus as Lord. At the moment of his baptism into Christ, he receives the forgiveness of his sins, the gift of the Holy Spirit and is added to God’s church.
A person, who has thus died to his old way of life and is born again of “water and the Spirit” is a new creation in Christ and begins to live a new life of discipleship because of his love and gratitude for God. Someone who is living as a disciple of Jesus is devoting himself to “the apostles’ teaching, the fellowship, the breaking of bread and prayer.” He is always striving to understand what it means practically to love God with all his heart and to love other Christians as Jesus loved his disciples. The result of such effort is a devoted, dedicated, determined family of believers who are empowered to reach out in word and deed with God’s love to their family, friends, neighbours and strangers.
We would be the first to admit that we have not “already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect”, but we are committed to following the admonition and example of the apostle Paul when he wrote, “but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me…Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” For almost 20 years now the members of the Vancouver Church of Christ have been pressing “on toward the goal” and will continue to do so until we reach it.
Hearing and then responding to the gospel has totally changed our lives in very real, practical and daily ways and continues to impact our characters, our relationships, our desires and our focus. We love to share with others about what God has done (and is doing) for us through his Son, his word and his church. Please check out the rest of our web site.
